NM Notes

As US forces came to dominate what we now call New Mexico the Pueblos tried to revolt again. Cannon of the US artillery slaughtered them. The Indians of the Pueblos and the Mexicans did have the satisfaction of seeing US forces take over the job of fighting the Comanche, Navajo, and Apache they had defended themselves against for so long. That fighting occupied most of the US Army for half a century. American fighting men's blood has ever been offered.

Finally US forces dominated Spanish, Mexican, French, Navajo, Apache, Comanche and all who stood before them in the area.

Treaties made with Indians and with those holding Spanish land grants were pushed aside. Americans made treaties and did not honor them. The land, person, and dignity of others was callously dishonored. Our word was worthless to them.

Still, NM kept much of its beauty even as it seemed to be being exploited to death. American capital financed cattlemen, even Southern cattlemen. Mining corporations were financed. Oilmen were financed.

Even men who seemed to love only money and power came to love that land of enchantment, though not in the same way as did those who came before the Apache and Navajo.

"Honor"

Not a great many years after the reconquest of the Pueblos by groups organized in Mexico ......
US forces came to dominate New Mexico and the Pueblos tried to revolt again. Canon of the US artillery made short work of there try. The Pueblos and crillollos did have the satisfaction of seeing US forces taking over the job of fighting the Comanche, Navajo, and Apache. That fighting occupied most of the US Army for half a century. American fighting men's blood has ever been offered.

In ways not always supportive of American honor US forces finally disposed of the Spanish, Mexican, French, Navajo, Apache, Comanche, and all who were seen as standing in the way of American Progress.
Spanish land grants which our forefathers promised to honor in written treaties and with hand over heart were not honored. The land person and dignity of others was dishonored.

New Mexico, the West, and much of the continent became 'ours' from sea to shinning sea.

Tohono O'odham

What's the difference between the Papago/Pima and the Tohono O'odham?
Does O' odham look Irish to you?

The Pima have something to do with sheets, don't they?

Have you seen the new Tohono O'odham National Cultural Center & Museum. I haven't.

Do you know anything about the tribes recent renewed cultural ties with people in Mexico?

The Tohono O'odham may be the largest American Indian nation in the US, except for the Navajo. Have the Tohono O'odham been in this land longer than the Navajo?

Who will go with me to the new museum? It is about 70 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona? I think that it is very near Sells, Arizona. Sells was thought of as the tribal capital. Organ Pipe National Park is right there. I remember a 7000 year old road heading south (and north) near there. I can almost hear the tiny bells that passed that way. It is an interesting area in which to cross the Mexico/US boarder. Wish I had thought of it coming back this time.
